By definition, Scotch is a distilled alcoholic beverage manufactured exclusively in Scotland. It is a perfect blend of water and malted barley which is fermented with yeast and then aged in the wooden oak barrels for years.

Peeling The Layers of Manufacturing Mystery

There are a lot of processes that goes into the production of Scotch Whiskey. The cereal Barley has to go through numerous stages from Malting, Mashing, Drying, Fermentation, to Distillation, and Maturation. Finally, the matured whiskey is bottled—giving it a final exquisite look.

The process flow of scotch manufacturing includes

Malting- At first, the best quality barley is allowed to germinate by soaking in hot water.

Drying- During this second stage of production, the germinated barley, also called as green malt, is allowed to go to the Kiln for drying.

Mashing- Here, the dried malt is converted into coarse flour, which is then mixed with water in the mash cask, converting it into a sweet sugary liquid known as wort.

Fermentation- Now, maintaining the temperature at 20 degrees Celsius, the wort is cooled down and poured into the washback (tall cylindrical vessel). Then, the yeast is added to trigger the fermentation process, transforming the wort into alcohol.

Distillation- Here the fermented product is placed and heated. After the one round through the pot still, the ABV of the spirit increases to 20%. The same process is repeated multiple times till the final product is obtained with an ABV of 60-70%.

Maturation- Every whiskey is aged in wooden barrels for years. While maturing, the scotch whiskey becomes smoother, gains its original flavour, and develops that exquisite golden colour.

By law, all scotch whiskeys must be matured for at least for three years till it attains its original deep flavour profile before bottling.
